Founders Story - Paul's Journey
It would be fair to say that I've battled with weight issues my entire life. I’ve done all the fad and crash diets, lost the weight many times and gained it all back…. And the truth is however you might see me now, in my head I’ll probably always feel like an overweight (fat) guy.
But two important things in my life changed.
First, I started to look at my overeating and unhealthy lifestyle as an addiction. And there is definitely great research showing that overeating can be addictive and that something like sugar could be as addictive as street drugs. So I began adopting methodologies and mantras from AA….. “It works if you work it” …… “one day at a time” …. “HALT”……
Secondly, I decided to go back to school and get a degree in Exercise Physiology. I wanted to learn everything there was to know about working out. Why? Honestly… I don’t like going to the gym…. I’m not one of these people that want to go to the gym and work out for 4 hours today. I wanted to learn how to get into the gym and maximize every minute I was there. So instead of being in the gym all day, I want to get in and out in an hour and spend the rest of my day doing things I love.
With those two tools in my arsenal, I set a goal that I wanted to lose 60 pounds. How did I do? I actually exceeded my goal and lost almost 73 pounds in 27 weeks. Sure I didn’t look perfect then and I don’t look perfect now, but I looked and felt so much better.
But what's incredible is that my lifestyle change has resulted in me keeping the weight off for more than 3 years.
The Name - 5 in 5 Club
Here's a harsh statistic 95% of people that lose more than 10% of their body weight are heavier than their original weight in 5 years. So that means that the average person only have a 5% chance of keeping the weight off for 5 years. Why is that? Well most exercise programs and diet plans are about drastic immediate results. We created this program to be about permanent and lasting weight loss. The kind of weight loss success that both Paul and Eric had. And the only way to achieve this is by lifestyle change. We want you to be a part of the 5 in 5 club.
The First Member - Eric's Journey
During Paul's journey, he became friends with Eric. Eric was also overweight and like Paul he struggled with diets for as long as Eric could remember. Over a few lunches and dinners they talked about Paul's journey and together Paul and Eric started to connect the dots on what would become their next challenge. Eric wanted to duplicate Paul's process and see if it would work for him. But Eric was a little different at 5’9 and nearly 400 pounds he had a longer journey ahead of him. They dug in and over the next two years Eric lost 176 pounds creating a video that would later go viral and be featured on MyFitnessPal and the American College of Sports Medicine Blog.
Birth of a Movement - The Website
Something interesting happened along the way! People started to approach Paul & Eric and ask how they could help them reach their fitness goals. That’s how this website got started. We wanted an effective way to get this method into your hands. Paul wanted to break down what Eric and he had talked about over those lunches & dinners, prescribe the correct exercise, tailor programs to the people that need it so desperately, and have it readily available to help as many people as possible.
